Susan Hutchison has more than 25 years of experience within the insurance industry, with expertise in the areas of life and living benefits. Susan has underwritten in both Canada, and the United States, as well as in the European markets, working with both third party administrators and major leaders in the insurance marketplace. Susan has also been involved in the development and delivery of in-house underwriting training programs. Formerly, Manager, Underwriting at PartnerRe Life Reinsurance Company of Canada, Susan has recently taken on the role of Vice President, Underwriting, North America Life.

Brigitte joined Hannover Re in August 2016 as Assistant Vice Present, Underwriting, responsible for the management of the underwriting team and client relations in the Canadian market . She has previously worked with State Farm International Life Insurance Limited as well as Desjardins Insurance.  With 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, Brigitte has held positions in Underwriting Management with a focus in Life & Health Insurance.  Throughout the course of her career she has successfully led teams through new system implementation and business integrations.  In addition to this Brigitte is a member of the CLHIA Underwriting Committee and has been involved in the development of the Industry Code on Genetic Testing in Canada and continues to be a part of the Working Group on Genetics.

Chantal Gray, BA

Chantal has more than 15 years of underwriting experience in the North American market, in both Life and Living Benefits, direct and reinsurance. Chantal has underwritten for several major carriers on Canadian, US and Caribbean business and has also been involved in the rules development on automated systems. Chantal recently joined Sun Life Financial as a Senior Bilingual Underwriting Consultant. She has served 5 years on the UAT and is past president and has just completed 3 years on the CIU in the role of Secretary. Her positive attitude and responsiveness are qualities that will serve her well as she takes on these additional responsibilities with the CIU.


John Duff, FALU, FLMI

John has been in the insurance industry for over 30 years working with several carriers in progressive positions in underwriting Life and Living Benefits. John’s expertise includes underwriting in the high net worth market as well as field underwriting having worked for PPI Advisory for 5 years. He is currently Director of Underwriting at BMO Insurance working with a great team of underwriters. As a FALU and FLMI, John currently serves on the Underwriting Development and Continuing Education Committee of the Academy of Life Underwriting. He has also served as a member of the Program Committee for AHOU and as a past President of the Southwestern Ontario Underwriters Club.

Martha began her long and varied career with the former Mercantile & General Reinsurance. Martha worked in a variety of disciplines including underwriting, risk management, technical accounting and IT. Although this is unusual for many underwriters, Martha has only worked for one company even if it changed names and hands a few times. Martha left the industry for a few years to raise a family but quickly returned in earnest to begin her underwriting career. Martha spent a decade in the specialized world of Disability Income Third Party Administration Underwriting. Finally, she returned to Life underwriting and continues to enjoy the daily challenges and learning opportunities it provides. Martha served as the Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Living Benefits Underwriters for three years. She knows what it takes to be successful and is looking forward to contributing to the CIU.

Brandy McCully, AALU, BA

Brandy began her career more than 15 years ago as bilingual underwriting trainee for creditor business at CUMIS Insurance Group. Over the years, she moved into more senior roles which included underwriting both Life and Critical Illness insurance, larger face amounts, managing a life underwriting department, conducting underwriting audits (for Life and Critical Illness insurance in English and French) and training underwriters new to the industry.

In her current role as a Senior Manager of the Corporate Underwriting area at RBC Insurance, she provides underwriting expertise and opinion (as required) for: Claim cases, including claim rescissions; to support product enhancements, including applications and marketing initiatives; to develop, review, revise and maintain underwriting guidelines and procedures.

She looks forward to the opportunity of serving on the CIU committee for years to come.

Bill Skelton

Bill started underwriting in 1978 with the M&G, in Cape Town South Africa. He underwrote life, critical illness and disability. He was a senior underwriter and during his time with the M&G also held the position of claims manager, and account manager for individual life business north of Zimbabwe. His last position at M&G was account manager for health insurance business. Bill and his family immigrated to Canada in 1997, landed in Vancouver and lived in that good town for two years doing contract underwriting as well as holding a claims position with Aetna. At the start of 2000 he got an underwriting position as an Underwriting Consultant with Manulife in Kitchener. Bill is still with Manulife, holds the position of Underwriting Director. Bill was involved in writing the underwriting rules for Manulife’s automated underwriting system. Current duties involve co-signs, audits, manual revision and other tasks required by the Chief Underwriter’s office. Bill enjoys technology - tries to see where technology can assist, at the level below the formal IT structure. His curiosity and passion for technology will assist in this new CIU executive position.

Sylvia has over 17 years of experience in the insurance industry, in both Life and Critical Illness in affinity, direct and reinsurance markets and has spent the last 9 years at RGA Life Reinsurance Company of Canada. Sylvia is a strong supporter of education and is a 5 year Executive Member and past President of the Underwriters Association of Toronto. She has participated in the training of new underwriters and obtained her FALU and FLMI in 2012. In 2014 she participated in RGA’s inaugural STIR program (Short Term International Rotation) and traveled to the US corporate head office for a 3 months immersion to learn all about E-underwriting. In 2015 she became Manager, Underwriting at RGA.

Rima started her career in the insurance industry more than 20 years ago at Mutual Life of Canada. After holding many positions at various insurance companies, Rima is currently Senior Underwriting Consultant at Sun Life Financial on the Underwriting and Claims Risk Management Team. Her underwriting experience over the years includes underwriting life and critical illness insurance. At Sun Life, Rima is responsible for performing life and critical illness audits as well as developing and delivering Life Underwriting Training. As part of this role, she also coaches underwriters in technical underwriting issues and mentors new underwriters to Sun Life philosophy. She continues to support the underwriting community and has served previously with the South Western Ontario Underwriting Club. Rima recently joined RGA as Senior Underwriting Consultant and is currently Program Director with the CIU.

Ivan's underwriting career began in 1997 with Transamerica. He later moved to Empire Life and Foresters working on Canadian and US business. While at Foresters, he also trained and mentored new underwriters. In June 2009, he joined Munich Re where he is now a Senior Underwriting Specialist. He has experience with Life and Critical Illness business and currently works on high net worth cases.

Kevin has over 25 years of underwriting experience in both Life and Living Benefits, working in both direct and reinsurance operations. He obtained his FALU with distinction and also has his FLMI designation. Kevin has been involved with various industry committees, including serving as Convention Secretary for the HOLUA, as Associate Editor of On the Risk and was also on the Seminar Committee of the Academy of Life underwriting.
