Meeting and Events
The 23 Annual CIU AGM was held Monday June 1st and Tuesday June 2nd at the Toronto Marriott Eaton Centre. The 2009 CIU AGM was a very successful conference, attracting upwards of 190 delegates, speakers, sponsors and guests, no small feat in the challenging climate of a world-wide recessionary economy. With a strong program agenda, and such industry icons and business leaders as: Keynote Bill Cheney, Chief Economist at MFC Global, the investments arm of John Hancock, who presented on the recent downturn and the immediate and future steps leading to our recovery, along with Brian Louth, Senior VP at RGA Life Re who spoke on recent and realistic Mortality Trends, as well as Counsel Ellen Bessner of Gowlings who presented on the highlights of risk and Protecting Your Business, delegates came away with a better understanding of the theme, “Keeping Your Balance”. Dr. Marla Shapiro, media figure and cancer survivor further defined that theme with her personal overview of her Journey With Breast Cancer. Underwriters and representatives of connected disciplines participated fully in the program emphasizing the CIU mandate to foster education, ideas sharing and networking. Main-stage and workshop presentations, as well as the highly regarded and very enjoyable Medical Panel exchange (Dr. Tim Meagher – ExamOne, Dr. Robert Pampe – Munich Re & Dr. Bob Snihura – RBC) focused on recent medical implications and interpretive insights that help us all work better. The new Canadian FALU were well-represented and honoured with presentations and support from industry colleagues and partners. Please view the list of new Canadian FALUs. The 2010 CIU Executive under the helm of Chair Leslie Frade (Manulife) will be gathering immediately to plan the CIU’s 24th AGM in Montreal, QC at the Conference, June 6-8, 2010, which will be held at CIU’s host hotel partner, the Marriott Chateau Champlain.
