Jennifer Dahl

Recently joining SCOR Global Life Canada in the role of Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer for Canada, Jennifer has 20 years of experience in the Life and Health insurance industry underwriting disability, life, long term care and critical illness insurance. From 2004 until 2018, she had been with RBC Insurance in a variety of roles including Underwriting Operations, Corporate and Group Risk Management, as the Director of Underwriting and Claims Quality Risk Management. Jennifer has been a volunteer with the Academy of Life Underwriting for the past 10 years and has spent 2 years volunteering with the AHOU Program Committee. She obtained her FALU and FLMI early on in her career, and also obtained her MBA in 2015. If she can find any free time, she enjoys spending it with her family and friends.


Shawn James

Shawn James, AALU

Shawn James has been underwriting for 14 years with experience in Life, Critical Illness and Long-Term Care.  In his current role as Director, Underwriting Risk Management, his responsibilities include training and auditing all of Sun Life’s Canadian underwriters, as well as maintenance and continued development of the underwriting rules engine, evidence of insurability questions, guideline development and mentoring of large case underwriters.  He is also deeply involved in Sun Life’s data analytics and underwriting optimization, helping to identify efficiencies in the underwriting process and improve client experience.  Shawn has been an active participant in our industry as a member of the AHOU program committee, SOA survey committees and was the President of SWOUC.  In his spare time Shawn is a minor hockey coach and avid golfer.


Brigitte Mallozzi

Brigitte joined Hannover Re in August 2016 as Assistant Vice Present, Underwriting, responsible for the management of the underwriting team and client relations in the Canadian market. She has previously worked with State Farm International Life Insurance Limited as well as Desjardins Insurance.  With 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, Brigitte has held positions in Underwriting Management with a focus in Life & Health Insurance. Throughout the course of her career she has successfully led teams through new system implementation and business integrations. Brigitte really looks forward to working with a great team on the CIU Executive and the opportunity to offer a rewarding experience to all CIU members.


Martha Ham

Martha began her long and varied career with the former Mercantile & General Reinsurance. Martha worked in a variety of disciplines including underwriting, risk management, technical accounting and IT. Although this is unusual for many underwriters, Martha has only worked for one company even if it changed names and hands a few times. Martha left the industry for a few years to raise a family but quickly returned in earnest to begin her underwriting career. Martha spent a decade in the specialized world of Disability Income Third Party Administration Underwriting. Finally, she returned to Life underwriting and continues to enjoy the daily challenges and learning opportunities it provides. Martha served as the Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Living Benefits Underwriters for three years. She knows what it takes to be successful and is looking forward to contributing to the CIU. 

Jim Braund

Jim has been working for nearly 30 years in underwriting at various companies in the Toronto area. He has worked on both Canadian and US direct and reinsurance business. He has a BA from York University, and both FLMI and FALU designations. He has some prior experience working as a volunteer with the CIU education committee in the early 2000s and with UAT. Jim enjoys time with his kids, coaching Soccer, winter sports, travel and camping. He is currently AVP at Optimum Reassurance.

Vanessa Ma

As an underwriter who handles Life, Critical Illness and Disability Insurance, Vanessa enjoys tackling new challenges and broadening her underwriting knowledge.  She has a strong interest in how technology is shaping our industry and how it can be used to streamline and simplify underwriting processes.  In her free time, Vanessa enjoys traveling the world and trying new food.  She looks forward to the opportunity to contribute to the CIU.

Hamid joined PartnerRe in 2018, as Senior Bilingual Underwriting Consultant.  Previously he was at SCOR handling all lines of business including Large Cases, as well as being involved in underwriting innovations, auditing and guideline review. Hamid began his career in the insurance industry 12 years ago with Sun Life in Montréal, before joining their underwriting team in Waterloo where he was involved in training, referrals, Underwriting projects and improvements.  He graduated from the University of Guelph with Honors in Kinesiology with a minor in Nutritional Sciences. Hamid was previously a Program Committee member with the CIU and is excited to assist as Technical Director.


Steven Miller

Steve has been underwriting for more than 15 years, and has significant Life and Critical Illness experience, in addition to large case/wealthy affluent markets in both the direct and reinsurance venues. He also participates and coordinates both internal and external auditing programs. Steve has obtained his FALU and FLMI. He graduated with Honours from the University of Western Ontario’s (UWO) Bachelor of Health Science program. He is a regular attendee at industry meetings, associations and conferences such as SWOUC, UAT, AHOU and the CIU.  Steve is currently in a Team Leader role at Partner Re based out of Toronto. Steve resides in Ingersoll, Ontario with his wife, two stepsons and dog, while enjoying spending his personal time in the Goderich area on the shores of Lake Huron, if not travelling out of the country.


Lianne Heppenstrijdt-Hamilton

Lianne has over 25 years experience in the Life and Health insurance industry, in both the US and Canadian markets and both the retail and wholesale channels. Over the years, she has been involved in process and guideline review and implementation, product development, people management and advisor training. She joined Sun Life in 2002 and made a move from the Canadian Division to the Corporate Division in 2014 where she is the Director of Underwriting and Claims Risk Management for the global enterprise encompassing North America and Asia. In this role, she is responsible for Sun Life's Global Risk Management Framework for Underwriting, involved in the Underwriting Manual review and update, referrals for the global underwriting teams and as a subject matter expert for our business partners. She is passionate about education and really looking forward to her new role on the CIU Program Committee.

Sandy started her career in the insurance industry 17 years ago.  She has experience in both the direct and reinsurance markets.  Her career started at Manulife Financial in an administrative role and over the years she
progressed into more senior positions.  She moved into underwriting in 2008 and joined RGA in 2016.  She has experience with Life and Critical Illness business.  In her free time Sandy is an avid reader and enjoys travelling.

Jeff Schafer

Jeff began his underwriting career in 2007 with Co-operators Life Insurance Company, now currently an Underwriting Consultant. Jeff underwrites life, critical illness, and disability insurance, along with underwriting claim opinions and mentoring. He obtained his Bachelor of Kinesiology at the University of Regina, FALU and FLMI designations.
