Brigitte Mallozzi

Brigitte joined Hannover Re in August 2016 as Assistant Vice Present, Underwriting, responsible for the management of the underwriting team and client relations in the Canadian market. She has previously worked with State Farm International Life Insurance Limited as well as Desjardins Insurance.  With 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, Brigitte has held positions in Underwriting Management with a focus in Life & Health Insurance. Throughout the course of her career she has successfully led teams through new system implementation and business integrations. Brigitte really looks forward to working with a great team on the CIU Executive and the opportunity to offer a rewarding experience to all CIU members.


Jennifer Dahl

Recently joining SCOR Global Life Canada in the role of Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer for Canada, Jennifer has 20 years of experience in the Life and Health insurance industry underwriting disability, life, long term care and critical illness insurance. From 2004 until 2018, she had been with RBC Insurance in a variety of roles including Underwriting Operations, Corporate and Group Risk Management, as the Director of Underwriting and Claims Quality Risk Management. Jennifer has been a volunteer with the Academy of Life Underwriting for the past 10 years and has spent 2 years volunteering with the AHOU Program Committee. She obtained her FALU and FLMI early on in her career, and also obtained her MBA in 2015. If she can find any free time, she enjoys spending it with her family and friends.


Susan Hutchison, CIU Chair

Susan Hutchison has more than 25 years of experience within the insurance industry, with expertise in the areas of life and living benefits. Susan has underwritten in both Canada, and the United States, as well as in the European markets, working with both third party administrators and major leaders in the insurance marketplace. Susan has also been involved in the development and delivery of in-house underwriting training programs. Formerly, Manager, Underwriting at PartnerRe Life Reinsurance Company of Canada, Susan has recently taken on the role of Vice President, Underwriting, North America Life.


Martha Ham

Martha began her long and varied career with the former Mercantile & General Reinsurance. Martha worked in a variety of disciplines including underwriting, risk management, technical accounting and IT. Although this is unusual for many underwriters, Martha has only worked for one company even if it changed names and hands a few times. Martha left the industry for a few years to raise a family but quickly returned in earnest to begin her underwriting career. Martha spent a decade in the specialized world of Disability Income Third Party Administration Underwriting. Finally, she returned to Life underwriting and continues to enjoy the daily challenges and learning opportunities it provides. Martha served as the Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Living Benefits Underwriters for three years. She knows what it takes to be successful and is looking forward to contributing to the CIU. 

Jim Braund

Jim has been working for nearly 30 years in underwriting at various companies in the Toronto area. He has worked on both Canadian and US direct and reinsurance business. He has a BA from York University, and both FLMI and FALU designations. He has some prior experience working as a volunteer with the CIU education committee in the early 2000s and with UAT. Jim enjoys time with his kids, coaching Soccer, winter sports, travel and camping. He is currently AVP at Optimum Reassurance.

Brandy McCully BA, AALU, ALMI, ACS

Brandy began her career more than 15 years ago as bilingual underwriting trainee for creditor business at CUMIS Insurance Group. Over the years, she moved into more senior roles which included underwriting both Life and Critical Illness insurance, larger face amounts, managing a life underwriting department, conducting underwriting audits (for Life and Critical Illness insurance in English and French) and training underwriters new to the industry.

In her current role as a Senior Manager of the Corporate Underwriting area at RBC Insurance, she provides underwriting expertise and opinion (as required) for: Claim cases, including claim rescissions; to support product enhancements, including applications and marketing initiatives; to develop, review, revise and maintain underwriting guidelines and procedures.

She looks forward to the opportunity of serving on the CIU committee for years to come.

Bill Skelton

Bill started underwriting in 1978 with the M&G, in Cape Town South Africa. He underwrote life, critical illness and disability. He was a senior underwriter and during his time with the M&G also held the position of claims manager, and account manager for individual life business north of Zimbabwe. His last position at M&G was account manager for health insurance business. Bill and his family immigrated to Canada in 1997, landed in Vancouver and lived in that good town for two years doing contract underwriting as well as holding a claims position with Aetna. At the start of 2000 he got an underwriting position as an Underwriting Consultant with Manulife in Kitchener. Bill is still with Manulife, holds the position of Underwriting Director. Bill was involved in writing the underwriting rules for Manulife’s automated underwriting system. Current duties involve co-signs, audits, manual revision and other tasks required by the Chief Underwriter’s office. Bill enjoys technology - tries to see where technology can assist, at the level below the formal IT structure. His curiosity and passion for technology will assist in this new CIU executive position.


Steven Miller

Steve has been underwriting for more than 15 years, and has significant Life and Critical Illness experience, in addition to large case/wealthy affluent markets in both the direct and reinsurance venues. He also participates and coordinates both internal and external auditing programs. Steve has obtained his FALU and FLMI. He graduated with Honours from the University of Western Ontario’s (UWO) Bachelor of Health Science program. He is a regular attendee at industry meetings, associations and conferences such as SWOUC, UAT, AHOU and the CIU.  Steve is currently in a Team Leader role at Partner Re based out of Toronto. Steve resides in Ingersoll, Ontario with his wife, two stepsons and dog, while enjoying spending his personal time in the Goderich area on the shores of Lake Huron, if not travelling out of the country.


Dave Mayer

Dave began his underwriting career in 1998 at Manulife and recently left Equitable Life to rejoin Manulife as Senior Underwriting consultant, Retail Markets. His industry designations include Fellow Academy of Life Underwriting and Registered Health Underwriter and he holds a BA and MA (Economics). He has experience volunteering in the industry as he is Past President of the Southwestern Ontario Underwriters Club. His interests outside work include camping, fishing and hockey. His warm demeanor, positive attitude, and enthusiasm is a great fit with the program committee. He is looking forward to providing exciting educational opportunities for our members.

Sandy started her career in the insurance industry 17 years ago.  She has experience in both the direct and reinsurance markets.  Her career started at Manulife Financial in an administrative role and over the years she
progressed into more senior positions.  She moved into underwriting in 2008 and joined RGA in 2016.  She has experience with Life and Critical Illness business.  In her free time Sandy is an avid reader and enjoys travelling.

Jeff Schafer

Jeff began his underwriting career in 2007 with Co-operators Life Insurance Company, now currently an Underwriting Consultant. Jeff underwrites life, critical illness, and disability insurance, along with underwriting claim opinions and mentoring. He obtained his Bachelor of Kinesiology at the University of Regina, FALU and FLMI designations.
