With over fifteen years of experience in the insurance industry, Erica has spent the past ten years in Underwriting, joining the Hannover Re Canadian Life Branch in 2018. Erica has experience underwriting Life, Critical Illness and Large Case business. Throughout her career, Erica has also piloted both Large Case and Elite Broker programs, as well as serving as a Subject Matter Expert on several Underwriting-related projects. Erica is very passionate about life-long learning, having completed several industry-related courses over the years, as well as currently pursuing a degree program at Wilfrid Laurier University on a part-time basis. Erica resides in Waterloo, Ontario with her husband and two sons, and enjoys spending her spare time traveling, attending live music events and taking in various hockey games. Erica is excited to continue to support the CIU in the coming year.

With a formal background in nursing, Karen left the health care industry and started her underwriting career in 2008 as an Underwriter with Manulife Financial. During her time there, Karen quickly gained valuable knowledge and a solid foundation of Life and Disability underwriting.  Additionally, Karen had the opportunity to mentor junior underwriters, before moving to Sun Life Financial in 2012 as a Senior Underwriter.  During her time at Sun Life Financial, Karen quickly became proficient in Critical Illness underwriting, and gained valuable exposure and experience with completing rescissions. She moved to LOGiQ3 in March 2016. Karen quickly became an expert in Life Valuations, Structured Settlements, Life, CI and DI underwriting, E Learning grading, as well as being involved in auditing and consulting projects. In 2018, she was promoted to a more formal coaching role. In her current role, Karen is still involved in production underwriting but is also responsible for training, mentoring, auditing and coaching of new and existing underwriters, both internally and externally. Her positive attitude, warm demeanor and passion for teaching and continuing education is a great fit with the Program Committee. Karen is looking forward to providing exciting educational opportunities for our members.

Marie-Claude Alarie, RN

Born in Trois-Rivières, QC, Marie-Claude earned her nursing diploma in 1994, and practiced both in the emergency room and as a research nurse. A career change to life insurance saw her become an underwriter at Industrial Alliance from 2002 to 2006. After having spent time doing paramedical exams, she subsequently worked as a claim specialist for the following 2 years. Marie-Claude returned to underwriting in 2008 with Manulife, and later joining SSQ, so as to have the opportunity to work remotely from Québec City. She has been in her current position at Swiss Re since April 2016.
Besides underwriting, she has been a passionate musician since childhood; she plays the flute, sings and has even tried the tuba. She is also a proud skate and hockey mom who enjoys 2 arenas in lieu of a cottage! In addition to her RN designation, Marie-Claude holds a diploma from a college for radio and TV presenters. She is looking forward to working with the Program Committee on developing educational program for the CIU.



Nicole Morrall

Nicole has more than 28 years of insurance experience, starting off her insurance career in 1990 at Crown Life in the policy change department, and in 1995 began underwriting with UNUM Canada.  Nicole is currently an Associate Underwriting Consultant at Manulife underwriting disability, life and critical illness insurance.   Current additional responsibilities include claims insurance review and cosigning.   As a witness and an active participant in the technological changes within the insurance industry, the process and procedures of insurance modernization are of great interest to her.  Personal community volunteering experience includes 7 years as a Girl Guide Leader.

 


Dave O'Donoghue

Dave has over fifteen years of experience in the insurance industry with the past 11 years being in underwriting with Sun Life.  Most recently Dave has been working on the Large Case team handling the largest and most complex Life and Critical Illness cases submitted through the Sun Life Distribution channel while also providing referral support to new and experienced underwriters and supporting multiple projects.  Dave has completed both his FALU and FLMI designations and is passionate about passing on the knowledge he has gained through formal and informal learnings to other underwriters to help grow and develop the underwriting profession.  Dave resides in Elmira, Ontario with his wife and young daughter and enjoys spending his spare time exploring this amazing country of ours, attending junior hockey games and spending time on the golf course with his family.   He is excited for this opportunity to join the CIU program committee to help provide amazing educational experiences to help shape the future of our profession.

 


Shawn Kropf

Shawn has been in the insurance industry for more than 17 years, starting on the New Business team at Manulife in 2003. He began underwriting in 2008 at Equitable Life, followed by Primerica, and then returned to Manulife in October 2017.  During his career, in addition to underwriting life and critical illness, Shawn has experience as a subject matter expert in piloting new software, managing forms and creating electronic applications. He lives in Kitchener, Ontario and has been married to his wife Heather for almost 24 years, and they have 2 adult daughters. In his spare time he enjoys camping, fishing and reading. Shawn is excited to participate in and contribute to the CIU program committee.

Mathieu began his insurance career in 2016 as a tele-underwriter at Canada Life after completing his BSc in Cell Systems Biology and Global Health. In 2017, Mathieu joined Logiq3 as a bilingual underwriter with a focus on the Life and CI market. Since beginning his underwriting career, Mathieu has completed multiple LOMA courses and is on his way to receiving his FALU and FLMI certifications. In his free time, he enjoys reading, biking and going to concerts.
